To [livejournal.com profile] 7ivy7, who's lurking: Hello!

Picture taken without a flash. Still learning the ins and outs of my new toy, and there are things that will take some getting used to, but overall I'm really pleased.

Very nice tones for what I assume is incandescent available light. Fuji makes good stuff.

Glad you like the new toy.

Thanks. The picture is tweaked a bit in PhotoShop. I took two shots, one without flash and the other with. I happen to like the non-flash picture better, though the flash picture was superior on the technical level. I'm glad I have the option of no flash.

Without flash is the way to go! I hardly ever use a flash. Don't worry about noise and other high-ISO technical issues that too many nerd about; natural-looking lighting is more important than low noise by a long shot.

I like it. It has a warm look. People always look better without flash, especially of you are over 40.

I know I never post a picture of me that was taken with a flash.

I went without a flash for many years, using film pushed to 1600. It worked okay. Now the Fuji will go that high (or higher) and has other compensating factors, I may do more of this. However, on a technical level I preferred the flash shot. I'll experiment more. Mainly, I need to relearn timing.

The picture above is tweaked more than I'd like to do for a batch of shots. Still, it's nice to know that they come out. For people of a certain age (eg ours), I rarely use Sharpen...

A PS technique that I've found that can work nicely for softening skin is a simulated diffusion effect.

You make a copy in a new layer, make the blending mode be darken and set opacity to something in the 20-50% range. Then do a gaussian blur on that layer to taste. You can play with the opacity and amount of blur vary the effect to taste.

Hmmm... more stuff to do in PS. Well, thanks for the tip. Sounds like a panel to me...
