My new computer just got here. My standard rule of thumb is "never upgrade incrementally" but it's been so long that I'm not merely skipping a generation, I'm skipping several upheavals in hardware and software.

I'm typing this on Safari, the browser that comes with the Mac these days. Right now I'm just testing to see if I can add entries to Live Journal. I think it will, since the Preview works.

It's actually rare when I recommend the top of the line Mac as the one to get, but this is one of those times. Plus family wanted to get me a nice 50th birthday present... I pared down my wish list but mom insisted on adding things...

Mac G5, dual 2.5G processors
2 x 250 G internal hard drive, plus an external 250G/800FW or fast USB. Yes, I have 3/4 of a terrabit of memory.
3.5 Gigs of RAM (hooray for 64 bit architecture!)
Airport built in (not that I'm using it... yet)
Bluetooth (wireless keyboard and mouse work, so far, as do the USB ones)
20" flat screen monitor
Divers and diverse cables that let me use my HDTV as a monitor as well as connect to the 20" CRT I have been using with my G3 while continuing to use the G3.
A wireless router, though I haven't used the wireless option, to connect my two computers and Rachel's to the cable modem.
I didn't upgrade all the software, which is why I'm still using the G3/OS 8.6, but I did upgrade a lot of it, including most recent versions/upgrades of Photoshop, Office, BBEdit, FileMaker, Toast, Eudora and so on. Haven't installed any of these yet.
I'm getting one of the low-end Mac speaker options. Not delivered yet.
A three in one printer. Not delivered yet.
Two splurges:
Another printer, photo quality, that will print on CDs & DVDs.
Logic Express audio software. Look for more and more interesting Shockwave CDs and mixes.
And because I bought it at the right time, I can upgrade to OS 10.4 for $9.95 when that comes out.

And my brother got me an iPod photo. Haven't even had a chance to play with that yet.

Anyone want a perfectly good SCSI UMax scanner? It's the one thing I'm pretty sure I won't keep.

183 lbs of boxes have been trickling in for a week. The computer came today and I'm just starting to install everything. Major downside at the moment: It's LOUD. but the fans don't always kick in and they shut down in Sleep Mode.

Hope this helps. At the moment I'm still searching around for install CDs that have to be around here somewhere...

Congrats!!
