I'm in a snarky mood at work, so here's to filling some time, probably over the course of the day. Grabbed from many, notably [livejournal.com profile] druidsfire.

A) Four jobs I have had in my life
1. Fuller Brush Man
2. Photographer
3. Masseur
4. Director of IT

B) Four movies I would watch over and over
None. There are no movies I would watch again and again. The concept is alien to me. Life is short and I have a good memory. Many of my favorite movies I've only seen once, and I could probably count on my fingers the number of movies I've seen more than three times.

C) Four places I have lived (long enough to receive mail)
1. Middletown NY
2. Albany NY (SUNYA)
3. Detroit, MI
4. The Bozo Bus Bldg, Minneapolis, MN

D) Four TV shows that I watch
1. The Simpsons
2. Monk
3. House
4. Pushing Daisies

E) Four places I have been
1. Darwin MN (The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota)
2. Toronto ON
3. Boston MA
4. Berkeley CA

F) People who e-mail me regularly
1. Netflix
2. LJ
3. Various family members
4. Marscon

G) Four of my favorite foods
1. New England Clam Chowder
2. Orange Juice (not from concentrate)
3. Steak, as rare as they can legally make it
4. Duck (Canard Ramen is my fave)

H) Four places I would rather be right now
1. Home
2. Marscon
3. Someplace new
4. At lunch

J) Four things I am looking forward to this year
1. MarsCon
2. Minicon
3. Thanksgiving w/Family
4. The Republican National Convention

K) Four favorite authors
1. Theodore Sturgeon
2. Samuel R. Delany
3. Patrick Smith (salon.com's Ask The Pilot)
4. Seymore Hersh

v. different attitude from yours. I re-watch movies, I re-read books, I re-listen to music, all the time. That way I know they're good. Also, the re-experience is different from the original experience, and especially with high art it's increasingly enriching.

I rarely reread books, and while I listen to music fairly often, if the same song (or commercial) comes on the radio twice in an hour I switch the station. This is not a rule, but a preference. Lately, I've been pandering to my 20 Year Rule, and flixing movies that I haven't seen in a while.

I tend not to watch movies like other people do. Further, DVDs have completely changed how I watch movies: I can watch a movie, look at all the Extras and watch again with the commentary track, and it all counts as one viewing.

I too was once a Fuller Brush Man.
DUring one of my High School summers.

I learned that I am not a salesman; that's not my career path.
I felt guilty pushing our overpriced stuff on people.

I agree about movies, but A Christmas Story I can enjoy year after year.

What Fuller Brush (among other sales jobs) taught me was that I can sell good stuff and am not very good at selling bad stuff. Fuller makes great brushes, and people were happy to see me. They had some junk that I gave a half-hearted pitch for, but those didn't sell well.

I'm a good salesman, but only when I believe in the product. Not the company... nor the goals...

Why are you looking forward to the Republican National Convention???
I was thinking of trying to leave town during that period.

It'll be loads of fun. I'll be as objective as possible when talking to goppies, but I also intend to have a great time talking to In The Heart of the Beast and other protesters. An event such as this one needs to be seen through the eyes of a Conceptual Artist.

Now understand that, as a long time master control operator, I watch TV differently from you civilians. I often don't look at the screen too much, relying on my ears to tell me if something is wrong. In fact, I'm listening to two TV stations now; if one of them goes silent I know I need to jump.

Also, I used to run movies on videotape and had to shorten them up to fit time slots. I got so I could tell where the "dull parts" would be and when to cut out. The standard dramatic pacing of movies has changed slightly over the decades, but remains stable enough that I know when the dull parts are coming. I haven't often guessed wrong.

But I have only bought a few DVD's, much less than most geeks. I think I've bought maybe twelve in the last year. The ones I love, I watch...that is, listen to...them over and over. Recently it's been the two versions of Sweeney Todd, Meet the Feebles and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm that's been occupying my TV. I run them while writing or editing video or other things.

You don't really watch tv so much as listen, as [livejournal.com profile] calimac listens to classical. This is fine, but I agree that you do, indeed, "watch TV different from you civilians". I could never watch two tvs at the same time; I can't really watch tv and use the computer, though I can go back and forth to do things during the commercials (which I always mute).

I only have a comparatively few DVDs most of which I haven't seen. I'm saving them for a rainy day (ie, when I'm bored and out of Netflix and nothing's good on tv). I saved many VHS tapes for a rainy day, and still haven't seen most of the ones I have.

When I watch a movie, I get into the editing and the sound design and the framing and such. Not all movies are worthy of such attention, and those movies don't stay in my memory for very long. Much like books, I can watch a mediocre movie more times than I can watch a great movie again. This is probably why I can watch reruns on tv...

(I'm going to do it, but I'm not really looking forward to seeing One Flew Over The Cukoo's Nest for the second time. One of the best films ever, which I saw when it was released and have had no need rewatch. I've seen most of the other Milos Foreman movies and have put this one off long enough.)
