"What kind of cheese do you want with that?"

Subway doesn't actually understand the concept of "Reuben Sandwich". They don't even have Thousand Island as a condiment choice. Subway's Reuben is to "Reuben" as White Castles are to "hamburger".

Still, allowing for the goyim, it's an okay fast food sandwich. The corned beef was okay (though not great) and the sour kraut was sour if not krautish. I played a bit with the extras, leaving out many of my usual additions so as not to stray too far from the original concept. If you don't have dressing, mustard will do.

This has been a gratuitous "here I am at the computer when I should be outside on a gorgeous day" post from Baron Dave. Oy vey.

The best Reubens in the Twin Cities (in my humble opinion) can be found at Cecil's Delicatessen in Saint Paul. If you've not, yet, please, please, PLEASE go there and order a Reuben and a cup of their Matzo Ball Soup!

Oh, and here's a map: Google Maps location of Cecil's Deli (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=cecil's+deli,+saint+paul,+mn&ie=UTF8&ll=44.9222,-93.187709&spn=0.00144,0.004056&t=h&z=18).

I remember Cecil's from their place in City Center. They had quite good lox and bagels, though I was unimpressed with their Matzo Ball Soup. I don't recall having a Reuben at Cecil's, though I might have, and that was more than a decade ago in a different city. I'll try the St. Paul store sometime. Thanks for the recommendation.

Thanks...saves me the expense of throwing away a test sandwich. BTW, the Arby's Reubens are okay which in my case mean palatable. Locally, Kireen's Irish Pub has a pretty decent Reuben.

My local Subway here in Iowa offers thousand island as a choice - might just be up to the local franchisee or something.

Anyway, tried the Subway Reuben and would probably give it 2.5 or maybe 3 out of 5 stars. It's ok if you keep your expectations in line and remember that it's going to be a "fast food" version of the reuben, but if you're looking for a real top-notch Reuben you should probably look elsewhere than Subway.
