As enticement to buy a Permanent Account, LJ gives $25 to a charity. A nice touch.

The question is: Which one? I thought it would be easy, a choice from a few dozen easily recognizable and worthy groups. But no. There are zillions to chose from.

I'd like something local. It amuses me to support a local charity from the coffers of a virtual social network. At the moment, the Minneapolis Jewish Federation has the inside track. All of them look worthy.

Suggestions?

I like Second Harvest (http://feedingamerica.org/about_us). They are actually a national umbrella organization with local food shelves as members, but in the end your money translates into actual food being delivered to poor people.

Check out the Charity Navigator (http://www.charitynavigator.org/) site for other tips on finding a worthy charity.

At the most recent drive at my place of employment for Second Harvest, the assertion was made that every $1 cash donation was converted into $9 worth of foodstuff...

I gave money rather than canned/boxed goods when I heard this.

Did they explain how they did that? I'd like to apply that to my 401(k)...

My guess (and it's purely a guess) is that they give the money to grocery stores/wholesalers, and in return get a better deal (a *much* better deal) than purchasing food retail.

But no, they didn't explain how they did that. And yes, I'd like to get that kind of return out of my 401(k), as well...heck, right now I'd be happy to get $1 out of my 401(k) for every dollar I put in...
