For the last several days, I have Caller ID. I don't want Caller ID and didn't order the service. I just called Qwest and I'm not being billed for it and the service rep didn't know a thing about any upgrade in overall service.

My initial guess was that The Phone Companies were throwing in basic stuff due to competition with Skype and internet phone service. Anyone else have a guess? I should test to see if I have three way calling...

Eventually Southwestern Bell/SBC/AT&T, as switch exchanges became fully automated, made all the passive services like Caller ID automatic and the active services available to everyone as extra-cost-each-use items for those who didn't order discounted packages, so you probably do in fact have three-way calling with ala carte pricing.

"AT&T", by the way, isn't AT&T -- the management and board are SBC's which bought AT&T and took the name for itself; same with Bank of America: California-based BoA was bought by Carolina-based Nation's Bank, which took the "Bank of America" name over itself. Neither "AT&T" or "Bank of America" has really been AT&T or Bank of America since the buyouts.

Sorry -- not phrased clearly: yes, you have QWest, not SBC/ATT, but what I meant to imply was that their setup was probably similar as what I cited.

I knew that some services were on ala carte pricing; Call Back has been like that for years. But how do you do that for Caller ID? It's either on or off.

And it's probably cheaper for Qworst to turn it on for everybody than to worry about who shouldn't have it.
