I've just added [livejournal.com profile] vampyr1792 as a Friend, even though she's... a second cousin once removed. She found me while doing genealogical research, and it turns out she's on LJ! And she's using a picture of my grandmother (her great great aunt, I think) from my site as her user icon. Sharing a gene or two with me, it's not at all surprising she wants to write fantasy. I'm croggled, just a bit, that we can connect this way. Next she'll be going to science fiction conventions....

I'm reminded of the time I went to a Krahn family gathering with my Grandpa and my folks-- this was a side of the family I'd never interacted with (long story, upshot-- my Grandpa was estranged from his family for more than 50 years). Anyway. I was meeting all these new people who just happened to be relatives. Bizarre. Used to think I wasn't related to any Krahns we might encounter, then I found out different.

At some point science fiction came up-- I'm not sure how. If my folks mentioned I went to conventions or what.

And then someone said: "hey, do you know Simba Blood?" And while I didn't/don't, I knew the name. Turns out she's a cousin of mine of some sort (one of her grandpas was my grandpa's brother? something like that).

Small world, indeed.

I'm a closet Sci-Fi junkie. My parents don't understand the genre so I keep my reading/writing mostly to myself. No one reads what I write, which will probably make it hard once I do get past the prologue of the book I've had in my head for the last 3 years. I can play it all out like a movie in my head, but writing it down is proving more difficult that I imagine it should be.

Plus there's the whole "do I need a degree to write?" question. And inevitably I decide I do, since it makes sense. You know, cause spelling and grammar and all that are so important.

And there's that annoying "job" thing that takes up my valuable writing time. :-P

I've never heard of a science fiction convention in the Springfield/Hartford area. Maybe I'm not talking to the right people! Hmmm...
