Fandom: You Can't Escape

I'm continuing to add to the Permanent Shockwave Radio Archives, and it's amazing how many people who have been on the show are still around and active in fandom. I've uploaded the first two shows from September, 1979. The First Show features me and [livejournal.com profile] serendipoz among others. The Second Show features [livejournal.com profile] skylarker reading, and was supposed to have a reading by [livejournal.com profile] lakeboy_55, who says hello in the beginning, but ran out of time to actually read. The Milk Carton Satellite Race Promo is also from that show. Do either of you remember who engineered? Chris? Everett? ETA: Even Everett doesn't remember...

I'm guessing you mean [livejournal.com profile] serendipoz, rather than [livejournal.com profile] serendipidoz...

Indeed. Fixed, thatnks.

Have you ever used a program called "Sound Studio"?

K.

It sounds vaguely familiar, so I might have used a version in the past. I use several programs now, mostly to edit the waveform. Archive.org likes you to upload the .aiff file and have it do the conversions. Dunno why.

What does "edit the waveform" mean?

K. [and what is the "it" in "have it do the conversions"?]

The "waveform" is the raw file, usually .aiff (Mac) or .wav (PC). It's the digitized picture of the analog soundwaves. I edit everything using the raw audio file. Other types of files, such as .mp3s, are compressed and not editable. Archive.org is the "it" which does the conversions automatically. I upload the .aiff file and it makes several different kinds of compression files and prepares streaming audio. Kinda neat, though it takes more than two hours for the .aiff to upload.
