Quote from The Sot-Weed Factor
Nov. 18th, 2006 02:27 amOkay, so I'm reading this book, The Sot-Weed Factor by John Barth. It's supposed to be good. I'm nearly half way through, and it isn't good yet. Indeed, huge swaths are interminable and tedious. I've been hacking away at it, a few pages at a time, for months. It's not so bad that I've given up, bolstered by the occasional good scene, and the recommendations are such that I might just tough it out. But I just got to a quote I have to share, to entice or discourage readers, as is their wont:
"If these comments mortified Ebenezer they titillated him as well, and revived the vague ardor that his late conjecture had not entirely douched." (p 342)
Next book(s) need to be some High! Sci! Fi! Adventure!, fun and readable in a night or two. It's been a while since I've read a book published in the 21st Century. Suggestions?
