Gleaned from an article in the STrib on Ripley's Believe It Or Not:

A carbon-filament 4-watt light bulb has been burning in the Livermore, CA, fire department since 1901, making it the world's oldest-known working light bulb. It may be the only light bulb with its own web site. I've heard of this bulb before, and am still amazed. I'm also amazed that no one's ever turned it off.

As prophesied in Gravity's Rainbow.

It would appear that the bulb hasn't burned out, but the Web site has.

Fixed. My coding was done by Edison.

I still have no idea what was going on in Gravity's Rainbow. A 4-watt bulb is insufficient.

Heh. Is there any scientific explanation for it?

Incredibly thick carbon filament pushing a whole FOUR watts. :)

And of course its only turned off when they move it, its outlasted three different fire stations.

1901? Ah, that was before "planned obsolescence."

1901 may be before the Teddy Roosevelt administration! The legacy of John Garfield lives on.

That John Garfield, he was a pretty good actor, wasn't he? I think you were looking for the name of President James Garfield.

Is that watt the problem was?

They showed this on Mythbusters as well. They were testing wattage and such of other bulbs. Quite neat.

Just wanted to comment.
