I just got off the phone with Brian of the Acoustic Rainbow series of radio promotion CDs. I brought up the subject of Dementia Artists. He was unfamiliar with the term, but said that he'd be interested in hearing from any musician.

Basically, you submit a song for a compilation. edited It costs $675 per song (thanks for the heads-up [livejournal.com profile] ericcoleman). Whether this is worth it to you to get beyond live appearances and Dr. D. is up to you. Can't hurt to make inquiries. I assume standard union rates apply if the song actually gets played on the air.

The Acoustic Rainbow CDs (and other compilations put out by the company) are more folk/old-timey than demented, but you never know what might interest them. My guess would be along the lines of Riverfolk and Carla Ulbrich. Worth a look.

Mind you, this is from somebody who doesn't record anything...but who knows how authors can be taken to the cleaners. Before you get into any deals like this, read the contract very, very carefully. Don't sign anything without doing so. Especially be aware if they need you to commit RIGHT NOW. Don't be panicked into any deals.

It would also be fair game for you to ask about other clients who have used these services. If there is anybody you recognize among these clients, talk to them. Ask if they got their money's worth.

Sorry to throw cold water on this, but there are a lot of con artists out there. Be very, very careful with your creations.

Wise words, to be sure, but I should point out that on my end (as a radio producer), I've already gotten two CDs from artists listed. Each cut on the compilation has contact information. At $675 per pop on a 16-song CD that comes out monthly, they don't have to be crooked. It's not quite the sweet deal for the artist I thought when they looked like they were making money off marketing to radio stations, and an artist should be careful about what they sign, but it seemed okay enough to spread the word.

Basically, there are a lot of musicians that don't know anything about the net, and this is the old fashioned way of reaching radio stations that are similarly old fashioned. The field is too big for the Weird Al phenomena to happen in quite the same way, so you might as well try for new audiences. But yeah, be careful.

If anyone has further information about them, let me know.
